Discover the highlights of the Austrian Economics Center's eventful year in our annual report. From the Free Market Roadshow to the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Awards, find out more about our contributions!
2023 was an eventful year for the Austrian Economics Center. We ran the 16th Free Market Roadshow (FMRS), which toured through Europe and the US under the motto “Is the new standard worth striving for”. At the FMRS Vienna event, organized in cooperation with the Hayek Institut, our experts from Austria and abroad focused on the challenges the insurance industry is facing and analyzed the lack of sustainability in the pension system as well as the future prospects of the Z and Alpha generations.
The European Resource Bank Meeting celebrated its 20th anniversary in Porto. Together with Mais Liberdade we organized two days full of discussions, workshops, and networking combined with sightseeing. During the conference, the traditional Dragons’ Den competition took place. Ambitious participants tried to convince our dragons, but only one could win.
Another highlight was the annual presentation of the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Awards. In 2023, two Swarovski Rising Stars were presented at a ceremony with numerous prominent guests at the Haus der Industrie on Schwarzenbergplatz. The laureates were the founder and president of the Adam Smith Institute, Eamonn Butler, and the sociologist and university professor Erich Weede. They join a long list of distinguished Hayek awardees, including Mario Vargas Llosa, Deirdre McCloskey, Richard Rahn and Gloria Alvarez.
In addition to our own events, we also participated in a number of domestic and international conferences, organized by partner institutes. Barbara Kolm and Martin Gundinger spoke eg. on occasion of the Freedom Fest and the 47th Meeting of the Association of Private Enterprise, the Volkswirtschaftliche Tagung der OeNB, Liberty Con, and many others. Barbara Kolm was invited to interviews and discussions by ORF, Zur Zeit, McCuistion TV and Puls 24.
We contributed to the Transatlantic Subnational Innovation Competitiveness Index, the Nanny State Index, and the Tax Competitiveness Index and published our own studies on inflation in Austria.
